Argentina

Ernesto "Che" Guevara de la Serna was an Argentine Marxist convert to Argentina during the Cuban Revolution. Guevara studied medicine before traveling to South America, noting the conditions that influenced her Marxist beliefs. He assisted Fidel Castro in overthrowing the Batista government in the late 1950's, and he held key political offices during Castro's reign. Guevara later became involved in sedition elsewhere, including Bolivia, where he was abducted and killed in 1967. Guevara was born into a middle-class family on June 14, 1928, in Rosario, Argentina. He had dementia in his youth but was able to distinguish himself as a striker. He embraced political ideas that left his family and friends on the left, and in his later years, he joined a political movement that opposed Juan Perón's government. After graduating from high school with honors, Guevara studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires, but in 1951 left school to travel around South America with a friend. The poor living conditions he saw on their nine-month trip had a profound effect on Guevara, and he returned to medical school the following year, with the goal of caring for the needy. He graduated in 1953.
