Lynn Davies

Date of Birth:

20-May-1942

Nationality:

United Kingdom

Profession:

Lynn Davies was a former Welsh athlete. He was one of the world's longest running players in the 1960's. After Ralph Boston of America hit the 25-year-old world record established by Jesse Owens in 1960, he improved Boston and European champion Igor Ter-Ovanesian world record five times. So, these two athletes are the big favorites to take the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. On the last day it rained in Tokyo, and none of the favorites jumped on their own records. So, that gold for Lynn Davies, 22, who set a new British record in gold and jumped 8.07 m for Boston and took silver and Ter-Ovanesian bronze. This was the second time in Olympic history that the gold medal in the long jump would not go to the United States adviser. The last thing happened was during the 1920s Olympics, when Swede William Pettersson won gold. In later years it proved that Davies' victory would mean little. He took gold at Euro 1966 in Budapest, and took silver at Euro 1969 in Athens. He has also won two Commonwealth Games, 1966 and 1970. He has set all six British records, the longest jump of 8.23m in Bern (1968).
