Donatien Alphonse Francois, Marquis de Sade was a French writer, philosopher, powerful politician and respected man who was respected for his liberal sex. Sade was born into a respectable family and although he wrote many books during his lifetime, he was notorious for engaging in sexual misconduct that included various forms of torture, slavery, and bestiality, which led to his arrest in 1778. His sexual misconduct eventually gave rise to the word ‘Sadism’ in English, meaning “a tendency to enjoy pleasure, especially sexual gratification, to hurt others, to suffer, or to be embarrassed.” Sade spent almost two decades in prison and 12 years in solitary confinement; yet it was during his time in prison that he wrote extensively. Much of her work has been about sex, sexual fantasies, and pornography. Some of Sade's best-known works include 'Juliette', '120 Days of Sodom', 'Justine' and 'Bedroom Philosophy'.
