Rita Mae Brown is an illustrious American activist, feminist, and author. She has gained fame not only as a noted mystery writer but also as a screenwriter. Brown got involved in activism pretty early in life when she was expelled from the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1964, for taking part in civil rights protests. She eventually went on to study at 'Broward Community College,' which did not segregate students on racial lines. Later, Brown studied at the 'New York University' and also acquired doctorates in political science and literature. Brown has been a prolific writer of poetry and novels, which have also been received well by people. Some of her best-known works include, ‘The Hand That Cradles the Rock,’ ‘Songs to a Handsome Woman,’ ‘In Her Day,’ ‘Southern Discomfort,’ ‘Venus Envy,’ ‘Rubyfruit Jungle,’ ‘Loose Lips’ and ‘Six of One’ among others. However, Brown is particularly renowned for the ‘Mrs. Murphy’ series of mysteries that was first published in 1990. She is also an articulate speaker and is vocal in expressing her thoughts on various social issues.
